Veterans Day

Todd is usually the more patriotic one in our family but I am becoming more and more patriotic, not that I wasn't before, it is just that I'm becoming more mindful of it. Maybe it is because I'm getting older. Todd was in the United States Air Force and I know that is part of him being patriotic. I can't help but get a feeling of emotions when I see a Veteran stand with his hand over his heart when he sees the flag.

Last year we went to the Midway while we were in San Diego. The day that we were there, they were setting things up for a dinner that evening to host the surviving Veterans of the Midway. When we went to leave several of the Veterans were arriving for the dinner. After being on the Midway all day and reading and learning about it, I felt very emotional to see all them arrive and hug each other and talk to each other. Todd began thanking several of them for their service.

I would hope that most of us take a minute on Veterans Day to remember the veterans who fought for our country and thank them.

I started looking for a few pictures for my blog and came across some information about Veterans Day that I thought was interesting. Probably a lot of you remembered it from history but to me I hadn't remembered and it was really interesting to me.

In 1918, World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The entire world celebrated. A truce, an armistice, was signed declaring that the "war to end all wars" was finally over. The next year, on November 11, the United States called the day "Armistice Day" in memory of all of the men and women who were involved in World War I. Surviving soldiers marched in parades through their home towns. 20 years later Armistice Day became a federal holiday. Sadly though World War I wasn't the "war to end all wars". World War II started in 1939 and lasted until 1945. After World War II ended Armistice Day was held again on November 11. The name also changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954.

Veterans Day, a day to remember the sacrifice of those who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts.

A day to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice.


I found this poem by Roger J. Robicheau, I really liked it, mostly the last line. Think about it where would we be?

Each donned their uniform to be

Defenders of our liberty

Their mission sure, their spirits bright

Guard freedom's home, be brave to fight

One final day each faced their call

Each gave their best enduring all

We'll never know what they went through

But know they loved this country true

Deep down inside we should all feel

What heroes gave, their cost so real

We must stay thankful, grateful of

The gift of freedom through their love

Their loved ones bore the gravest pain

What we can't know, some now sustain

To God I pray their pain will cease

And each will find long lasting peace

Remember this from year to year

What heroes gave - shan't disappear

We'll never let their special day

Their time for honor slip away

These brave fought for a nation free

If not for them, where would we be?

I hope that all of us will take time to thank a Veteran for his sacrifice for us. This month of Thanksgiving I'm am so thankful for my freedom and to that freedom I owe a Veteran!
