Fractured Growth Plate

Last week we found out that Jayce has fractured the growth plate in his left foot. Funny thing is we don't even know when it happened. He's had a few crashes on his bicycle this summer, well enough that I teased him I was getting him a set of training wheels, and then he twisted his left foot wrong when he was riding dirt bikes with a friend, but nothing that lasted longer than him limping for a day or two.

Last week he was helping me watch some friend's children and giving bike rides, playing tag with them, keep away, hide and seek and basically on the run helping me out. When we got home that night and he took his shoe off he screamed in pain. Todd and I thought maybe he had a charlie horse or a ketch in his foot and told him to stretch it, which brought about more screams. We gave him Advil and tried an ice pack but after about a half hour of him in pain we decided to take him to the emergency room. They did blood work and x-rays but couldn't find anything. The doctor at the emergency room got a hold of an orthopedic surgeon and they thought it was possibly fluid. Dr. Larson told Dr. Packer to put it in a plaster splint and give him crutches and said he would see him in the morning.

After going to an appointment at Dr. Larson's office we found out that Jayce had fractured his growth plate. Apparently the growth plate is not solid bone so the fracture did not show up on the x-rays.

So, for at least the next three weeks Jayce will be wearing a walking cast and using crutches. So far he is doing pretty good! As long as it heals properly, he shouldn't have any problem with it down the road.
